Our take

Written Aug 2, 2026

o1 is a hosted-only reasoning model from OpenAI that accepts text, images and files, and can handle up to 200,000 tokens in a single request. It scores highest on coding tasks among its six measured categories, but creative writing is a clear weak point.

Who should pick it

Pick this for coding tasks where its measured leaderboard strength stands out, or for long-document analysis that needs a very large request limit. Use it when you need multimodal reasoning over images and documents and proprietary hosting is acceptable. Skip it if you are writing creative copy, need fast output, or want price competition between providers.

The case for it

  • Highest measured coding score among its six evaluated categories, with a 51.7-point gap over its next-strongest skill.
  • 200,000-token request limit supports long-document analysis.
  • Consistent leaderboard scores across multiple evaluation dates in late July 2026.

The case against it

  • Creative writing is the lowest of its six measured categories, 27.7 points below its next-lowest score and 51.7 points below coding.
  • Slow output on the only measured endpoint: 14 tokens per second on OpenAI's own service.
  • Only two tracked offers with no price competition between them.

WritingWe do not rate this

Scored, not ratedThe placings are on the right.

Two boards come close and neither tests writing: Arena Creative Writing asks people which of two replies they prefer, and LiveBench Language tests whether a model understood a passage. So we show where o1 placed and give it no mark out of five.

These tests check whether a model follows instructions — a precondition for all the work above, but not a measure of how well that work is done, which is why they get no rating.

Cheapest published offer

Why this differs from the header. The strip above quotes OpenAI's own list price. This is the cheapest live offer at the widest standard context we hold, whoever is serving it — a reseller undercutting a lab is ordinary commerce, not an error.

What we do not know about this model yet

  • Nothing we hold says whether an endpoint streams, so we do not show it either way.
  • 1 of 2 listings do not say whether they train on prompts.
