Our take
Written Aug 3, 2026Sonar Reasoning Pro is Perplexity's proprietary text-and-image model built for deep research rather than quick chat. It handles up to 128,000 tokens in a single request, but comes with a high price tag and no measured quality scores in our data.
Choose this for long-document analysis at 128,000 tokens where reasoning depth matters more than speed, or when you are already embedded in Perplexity's ecosystem and can accept vendor lock-in. Skip it if you need fast output, verified benchmark scores, or a choice of providers at different price points.
The case for it
- Substantial context length for long-document work, at 128,000 tokens.
- Identical pricing across both tracked hosts, so provider choice carries no cost penalty.
- Known throughput of 18 tokens per second on Perplexity's own infrastructure.
The case against it
- Expensive for its class with no quality verification in our data.
- Slow throughput at 18 tokens per second, with no faster option available even at the same price.
- Only two tracked offers, both identically priced, leaving no room for price competition.
How good is it?
We hold no score for this model.
We look for every model we track on every board we watch, and none of them has turned up Sonar Reasoning Pro — so there is no intelligence, coding, agentic or writing score to show you, not a low one, none.
Or rent it from someone else
Why this differs from the header. The strip above quotes Perplexity's own list price. This is the cheapest live offer at the widest standard context we hold, whoever is serving it — a reseller undercutting a lab is ordinary commerce, not an error.
